HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 110
Commending John A. Crotts.

WHEREAS, Roanoke police officer, John A. Crotts, received the 2004 Meritorious Service Medal, Virginia's highest honor for heroism awarded to public safety officers; and

WHEREAS, the prestigious award program is administered by the Virginia Public Safety Foundation, which assists families of public safety officers killed in the line of duty; and

WHEREAS, on January 7, 2004, Officer Crotts was responding to a call when he spotted a man, bedsheet tied around his neck, treacherously dangling from a bridge 60 feet above the railroad tracks; and

WHEREAS, without hesitation, Officer John Crotts, with the assistance of a passer-by, courageously placed his body over the bridge railing in order to pull the man to safety; and

WHEREAS, on July 8, 2005, Officer John Crotts responded to the Elm Avenue Bridge for an attempted suicide call and found a man leaning over the bridge that spans Interstate 581 and while  three officers distracted the subject, Officer Crotts grabbed him off the bridge and pulled him to safety; and

WHEREAS, this most recent act of heroism and his laudable record of distinguished service has earned Officer John Crotts the respect of his peers; and

WHEREAS, Officer John Crotts' quick-thinking and selfless actions have resulted in dramatic and successful rescues of citizens; and

WHEREAS, Officer John Crotts is an inspiration and exceptional role model for public safety officers throughout the Commonwealth and a worthy recipient of the 2004 Meritorious Service Medal; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend John A. Crotts for his willingness to risk his own life to save another; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John A. Crotts as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for his bravery and dedication as a police officer for the City of Roanoke.
