058560820WHEREAS, Larry C. Nelson, Sr., of Virginia Beach, a dedicated public servant and exemplary law-enforcement officer, died on January 25, 2005; and
WHEREAS, a native of Xenia, Ohio, Larry Nelson valiantly served his country in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retiring from the United States Navy after 22 years of service; and
WHEREAS, dedicated to the safety and security of Tidewater residents, Larry Nelson served for 20 years as an outstanding Norfolk law-enforcement officer, retiring from the Old Dominion University Police Department in 1998; and
WHEREAS, committed to his fellow police officers, Larry Nelson was an invaluable member of the executive board of the Virginia Order of Police, serving as treasurer from 1988-1998; and
WHEREAS, Larry Nelson was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 50, the American Legion Post 141, the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 166, the Khedive Shriner's of Chesapeake, the Scottish Rite of the Free Masonry, the Moose Lodge 1198, and the Military Order of the Cootie, as well as senior vice commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 392; and
WHEREAS, a respected citizen and great-hearted community supporter, Larry Nelson will be sorely missed by his family, his fellow law enforcement officers, and countless friends and admirers in the Tidewater community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an exceptional Virginian and loyal public servant, Larry C. Nelson, Sr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Larry C. Nelson, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and respect for his memory.
