058476800WHEREAS, Helen Beavers Savedge of Surry County, a retired pharmacist and an effective and respected community activist, died on November 29, 2004; and
WHEREAS, Helen Savedge was one of the first female students to attend Virginia Tech, completed nurse's training at Norfolk General Hospital, and later graduated from the School of Pharmacy at the Medical College of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Helen Savedge, who came to Surry County as a pharmacist for the Surry Drug Company, also worked at pharmacies in Smithfield and Chuckatuck; and
WHEREAS, by the mid-1970s, Helen Savedge elected to work part-time as a pharmacist and devote more time to her family and the operation of the family business, Melville Farm; and
WHEREAS, Helen Savedge was a member of Flying Farmers of America; and
WHEREAS, Helen Savedge became interested in Surry County's government, joining the Surry County Organization for a Responsible Electorate (SCORE) and assisting with efforts to effect change in Surry's government and to save the historic Surry Courthouse from destruction; and
WHEREAS, a woman of significant accomplishment in a variety of fields, Helen Savedge is missed by her family and by her countless friends, colleagues, and admirers in the Surry County community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a fine Virginian, Helen Beavers Savedge; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Helen Beavers Savedge as an expression of the high regard in which her memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
