SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 468
Celebrating the life of Sergeant Nicholas C. Mason.

WHEREAS, Virginia Army National Guard Sergeant Nicholas C. Mason, a resident of King George, was killed in action in Mosul, Iraq, on December 21, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Mason was a 2002 graduate of King George High School; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Mason enlisted in the 229th Engineer Battalion, Virginia Army National Guard, when he was 17; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Mason was assigned to Company C, 276th Engineer Battalion, Virginia Army National Guard, when that unit was mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Mason arrived in Iraq with the 276th Engineer Battalion, Virginia Army National Guard, in March 2004; and

WHEREAS, on December 21, 2004, Sergeant Nicholas C. Mason, with his friend and fellow soldier, Sergeant David Ruhren, and other service members lost their lives as a result of a terrorist attack on their installation; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Nicholas C. Mason's death is a reminder of the hazards faced daily by the thousands of young Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm's way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Sergeant Nicholas C. Mason; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sergeant Nicholas C. Mason as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
