WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Alexandria was awarded its official charter on March 14, 1928, under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Warrenton; and
WHEREAS, shortly after its founding, the Rotary Club of Alexandria began sponsoring programs to benefit the children of Alexandria; and
WHEREAS, during the Great Depression, club members saw the critical need for day nursery services to ease the burden on young working mothers, and the Alexandria Day Nursery was born; and
WHEREAS, in keeping with its tradition of helping the children of the community, the Rotary Club of Alexandria also sponsored the Little League of Alexandria for several years; and
WHEREAS, in 1990 the members of the Rotary Club of Alexandria founded the Alexandria Rotary Foundation, which channels proceeds from major fund-raising events and projects to worthy charitable groups and projects in the Alexandria area; and
WHEREAS, on its 77th anniversary, the Rotary Club of Alexandria, with more than 140 members, has become the largest of the 52 Rotary Clubs in District 7610 of Rotary International; and
WHEREAS, since 1928, the members of the Rotary Club of Alexandria, through their sustained and generous contributions to the citizens of Alexandria, have lived up to the motto of Rotary International: "Service Above Self"; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Rotary Club of Alexandria on the occasion of its 77th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Stuart Matthews, president of the Rotary Club of Alexandria, as an expression of the congratulations and best wishes of the General Assembly.
