2005 SESSION
WHEREAS, Herman Key, Jr., of Charlottesville, an athlete, community activist, and 10-year member of the Charlottesville Planning Commission, died on June 20, 2004; and
WHEREAS, a graduate of Fluvanna High School, where he starred on the football team, and of the University of Virginia, Herman Key, Jr., was assistant director of the Independence Resource Center in Charlottesville; and
WHEREAS, Herman Key, Jr., specialized in the Americans with Disabilities Act at the Independence Resource Center, helping individuals with disabilities to manage and control their own lives; and
WHEREAS, on the Charlottesville Planning Commission, Herman Key, Jr., was one of the leaders of numerous neighborhood improvement efforts, including the Transition Zoning Ordinance, which was tested in his own neighborhood of Fifeville; and
WHEREAS, Herman Key, Jr., also served the residents of Charlottesville on the Housing Policy Task Force and the Piedmont Housing Alliance and was named in 2002 to the Virginia Real Estate Board, where he chaired the Fair Housing Committee; and
WHEREAS, Herman Key, Jr., was captain of the Charlottesville Cardinals wheelchair basketball team for nearly 20 years, where his aggressive play mirrored his aggressive leadership in the Charlottesville community; and
WHEREAS, Herman Key, Jr.'s contributions to the Charlottesville community were many and lasting, and he will be missed by the people with disabilities and the everyday citizens of Charlottesville whom he served with such diligence and effectiveness; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an exceptional citizen of Charlottesville, Herman Key, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Herman Key, Jr., as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
