058364796WHEREAS, Robert James "Bob" Heittman, a resident of the Franconia section of Fairfax County and a widely respected Northern Virginia transportation expert, died on May 10, 2004; and
WHEREAS, a native of Brighton, Massachusetts, Bob Heittman enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1954, worked with early computers and electronic countermeasures, and became a skilled graphic designer for Air Force intelligence at the Pentagon; and
WHEREAS, after his retirement from the Air Force in 1975, Bob Heittman rejoined the Pentagon as a civilian employee and worked until his retirement in 2000 after 42 years of federal service; and
WHEREAS, Bob Heittman was one of the first citizens appointed in 1989 to the Fairfax County Transportation Advisory Commission, created to advise the Board of Supervisors on such issues as road and transit priorities, transportation financing, and legislative initiatives; and
WHEREAS, Bob Heittman was a member of the Lee District Land Use and Transportation Advisory Committee since the late 1970s and served as chairman of the committee in the early 1990s; and
WHEREAS, Bob Heittman was well known and highly respected for his innovative solutions to complex problems, his effective use of photographic and visual images, and his ability to communicate with citizens, elected officials, and professional staff; and
WHEREAS, following his retirement, Bob Heittman became a full-time volunteer for such organizations as the Fairfax County Historical Commission and the Franconia Museum and served with great effectiveness as an ombudsman for citizens affected by transportation and development issues; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of Bob Heittman's profound impact on transportation in Northern Virginia, a part of the "Mixing Bowl" interchange of Interstates 95, 395, and 495 near Springfield has been named the Robert J. (Bob) Heittman Memorial Bridge; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an exceptional citizen of Northern Virginia, Robert James Heittman; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert James Heittman as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
