050933756WHEREAS, poor oral health and untreated oral disease can significantly impact the quality of life; and
WHEREAS, key to the delivery of oral health care services is the dental hygienist who administers preventive dental treatment, instructs patients regarding care of the teeth, performs x-rays, and assists dentists with mixing compounds for filling cavities, sterilizing dental instruments, and performing surgical work; and
WHEREAS, increasing public awareness of the importance of oral health and the continued shortage of dental hygienists throughout the nation and the Commonwealth will likely increase the demand for dental hygienists; and
WHEREAS, the Joint Subcommittee Studying Access to and Costs of Oral Health Care determined that the survey of nonemployed dental hygienists conducted by the Virginia Dental Association should be updated in order to determine whether these persons are planning to reenter the profession, thereby providing a corps of skilled dental hygienists and easing the demand for these professionals in the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the Virginia Dental Association be requested to update the survey of nonemployed dental hygienists.
The Virginia Dental Association shall submit to the Division of Legislative Automated Systems an executive summary and report of its progress in meeting the request of this resolution no later than the first day of the 2006 Regular Session of the General Assembly. The executive summary and report shall be submitted for publication as a report document as provided in the procedures of the Division of Legislative Automated Systems for the processing of legislative documents and reports and shall be posted on the General Assembly's website.
