2005 SESSION
WHEREAS, following a 2–2 start, the 2004 Virginia Tech Hokies football team won eight consecutive games, including six Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) contests, to finish the season with a record of 10–2; and
WHEREAS, in their first year as members of the ACC, the Hokies won the conference championship with a record of 7–1 and earned the ACC's Bowl Championship Series invitation to the Nokia Sugar Bowl; and
WHEREAS, the 2004 season was particularly satisfying for Virginia Tech fans because the Hokies were picked in preseason polls to finish sixth or lower in the 11-team ACC; and
WHEREAS, the season also included victories over traditional rivals West Virginia University, the University of Virginia, and Miami University; and
WHEREAS, under ACC Coach of the Year Frank Beamer, the Hokies won all four of their ACC road games, won four games decided by a touchdown or less, and made their third trip to the Sugar Bowl; and
WHEREAS, at the Nokia Sugar Bowl on January 3, 2005, the Hokies represented Virginia Tech, the Commonwealth, and the ACC in a spirited contest against the third-ranked and undefeated Auburn Tigers; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Tech Hokies made their 18th appearance in a bowl game and their 12th consecutive appearance during the tenure of Head Coach Frank Beamer; and
WHEREAS, Virginia Tech's appearance in a Bowl Championship Series bowl game capped a season characterized by an exceptional team effort to overcome the odds and succeed beyond the expectations of many; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Virginia Tech football team on its 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference football championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Frank Beamer in honor of the outstanding success of the 2004 Virginia Tech Hokies.
