HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 36
Commending Virginia Ellen Whitten Harvey.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 28, 2005

 

WHEREAS, Virginia Ellen Whitten Harvey, after 31 years of exceptional service to the House of Delegates and the Commonwealth of Virginia, retired on June 10, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Harvey graduated from Colonial Heights High School in 1966 and received a bachelor of fine arts degree in fashion design from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1970; and

WHEREAS, an outstanding honor student, named to Who’s Who Among Students in Colleges and Universities in her graduating year, Virginia Harvey was a cheerleader for the VCU Rams, an active and enthusiastic member of numerous clubs and student service organizations, and, as an alumnus, continued her support as a member of the VCU Arts Council from 1986 through 1988; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Harvey’s generous contributions to university life earned her the distinguished Jane Jones Thornton Award for notable service to the University; and

WHEREAS, prior to her employment by the House of Delegates, Virginia Harvey served as docent for the Valentine Museum; and

WHEREAS, in 1973 Virginia Harvey began her longtime service to the Commonwealth on the first floor of the State Capitol building in the Enrolling room; and

WHEREAS, after being promoted to the Indexing department, Virginia Harvey was appointed Indexing Clerk in 1985, and then deservedly to Assistant Clerk for Indexing and Enrolling in 1991, where she served impeccably until her retirement; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Harvey always gave generously of her time and talents as chairman of the special events committee, fire warden of the General Assembly Building, and board member of the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign; and

WHEREAS, an exceptionally skilled and accomplished professional, Virginia Harvey remained a longtime member and contributor to the American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries; and

WHEREAS, during her exemplary career with the House of Delegates, Virginia Harvey served under Clerks George R. Rich, Joseph H. Holleman, Jr., and Bruce F. Jamerson, as well as Speakers John Warren Cooke, A. L. Philpott, Thomas W. Moss, Jr., S. Vance Wilkins, Jr., and William J. Howell; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Harvey, a gracious and cordial member of the House of Delegates staff, was a valuable asset to the operational success and proficiency of the General Assembly; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates, joined by numerous admiring friends and colleagues, hereby commend Virginia Ellen Whitten Harvey on the completion of a fine career of public service and wish her much happiness in her retirement and success in all of her future endeavors; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Virginia Ellen Whitten Harvey as an expression of the gratitude of the House of Delegates for her outstanding service and dedication to the Commonwealth.
