WHEREAS, Randolph-Macon College, founded in 1830 in Boydton, Virginia, is the oldest Methodist-affiliated college in continuous operation in America by date of its charter; and
WHEREAS, Randolph-Macon College moved to Ashland, Virginia, in 1868, after the railroads to Boydton were destroyed during the Civil War; and
WHEREAS, Randolph-Macon College is the founding institution of what became a Randolph-Macon "system" of five colleges and preparatory schools, three of which continue in operation today; and
WHEREAS, Randolph-Macon College, which became coeducational in 1971, has been a Phi Beta Kappa institution since 1923; and
WHEREAS, Randolph-Macon College was the first college in the nation to move from a Latin/Greek-based curriculum to one that was based on the English language; and
WHEREAS, Randolph-Macon College was the first college in the South to build a gymnasium and the first in the nation to require physical education for a degree; and
WHEREAS, Randolph-Macon College is rated by the Carnegie Foundation as a Baccalaureate 1 college, placing it among the most elite liberal arts and sciences colleges in the United States; and
WHEREAS, three buildings on the Randolph-Macon College campus are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (Washington and Franklin Hall, Pace-Armistead Hall, and the Old Chapel); and
WHEREAS, Randolph-Macon College and Hampden-Sydney College play annually in the oldest small-college football rivalry in the South; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby recognize Randolph-Macon College for its distinguished service to Virginia and to the nation on this the 175th anniversary of the Bill of Incorporation enacted by the General Assembly on February 3, 1830; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. Roger H. Martin, president, in honor of this milestone in the history of Randolph-Macon College.
