WHEREAS, Karl Ingebritsen, longtime community leader and extolled creator and director of LINK, retired December 31, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Karl Ingebritsen, LINK's first and only director, created the web-based information system 15 years ago to encourage retail, office and other business employees to ride-share and utilize public transportation; and

WHEREAS, by fully automating access to transportation schedules and other community information, Karl Ingebritsen’s premier Internet website, sponsored by the Reston Town Center Association in conjunction with the Fairfax County Department of Transportation, can respond to thousands of information requests each month; and

WHEREAS, Karl Ingebritsen, an employee of the Central Intelligence Agency from 1960-1969, moved from Boston to Reston in 1965 intrigued by the famous Look magazine article depicting Reston and its New Town movement; and

WHEREAS, moving into Hickory Cluster, one of the three original town house clusters built on Lake Anne, Karl Ingebritsen became the first executive director of what would become the Reston Association (RA); and

WHEREAS, after serving the association for several years, Karl Ingebritsen worked as a management consultant for the New Town movement, of which Reston was a key part and later continued to work in property management and commercial real estate; and

WHEREAS, in 1968 Karl Ingebritsen was instrumental in the implementation of the community's first commuter bus system and other transportation improvements; and

WHEREAS, committed to the continued growth and development of Reston, in 1982 Karl Ingebritsen was one of the founders and the first president of what is now the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce (GRCC); and

WHEREAS, a steadfast proponent of quality transportation systems and of adequate funding for the transportation needs of Reston residents, Karl Ingebritsen served on the GRCC's transportation committee and the legislative affairs committee; and

WHEREAS, Karl Ingebritsen spearheaded the drive to bring a hospital and quality health care services to the Reston community, becoming chairman of the Reston Hospital board of trustees and serving on the steering committee and on the board from 1986-1992; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Karl Ingebritsen has been the recipient of numerous civic awards including the Reston Times Citizen of the Year award for his ardent support of transportation improvements in 1989; the GRCC's Pinnacle Award for his outstanding contributions to the Chamber and the local business community in 1997; and the GRCC and Reston Interfaith's Best of Reston award for his dedication to the city in 1999; and

WHEREAS, Karl Ingebritsen's profound vision and outstanding contributions have left an indelible mark on the vitality of the community of Reston; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Karl Ingebritsen for nearly 40 years of selfless service to the Reston community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Karl Ingebritsen as an expression of the gratitude of the General Assembly for his valuable contributions to the continued enhancement of the quality of life for the citizens of Reston.
