2005 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Occoquan Watershed Coalition is a nonpartisan and broad-based citizens’ group that was organized on December 7, 1994, to protect the Occoquan Watershed area of Fairfax County; and
WHEREAS, the Occoquan Watershed Coalition works with many organizations, as well as the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, to address issues confronting a defined area of the Springfield District that includes nearly 5,000 homes with a population of more than 16,000 citizens; and
WHEREAS, realizing the importance of consensus building, the Occoquan Watershed Coalition has contacted, met, or cooperated with members of the General Assembly, the Secretary of Transportation and the Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Transportation, Fairfax County and Prince William County supervisors, various town officials, and representatives of local citizens' associations; and
WHEREAS, in addition to close monitoring of numerous transportation decisions, the Occoquan Watershed Coalition has become involved with the closure and final use of the District of Columbia prison complex at Lorton, various planning commission actions, physical reconnaissance of the Occoquan River by boat and Bull Run on foot, improvements to Sandy Run Park and Pohick Regional Park, and many others; and
WHEREAS, the success of the Occoquan Watershed Coalition is the result of the energy and determination of its members, who generously volunteer their time, talents, and experience for the greater good; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Occoquan Watershed Coalition on the occasion of its 10th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Occoquan Watershed Coalition as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation for its dedication to protecting a valuable natural resource.
