HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 824 Commending the Gate City High School girls' volleyball team.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 28, 2005 Agreed to by the Senate, February 3, 2005

 

WHEREAS, the Gate City High School girls' volleyball team won the 2004 Virginia High School League Group A state volleyball championship, contested at Carroll County High School in Hillsville; and

WHEREAS, the Gate City Lady Devils finished their 2004 regular season with a record of 17–2 and the Lonesome Pine District championship; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Devils captured the Lonesome Pine District tournament title and the Region D championship on their way to the state championship; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Devils defeated Powell Valley High School and J. I. Burton High School in the Lonesome Pine District tournament, then won the regional with a victory over Castlewood High School and a repeat victory over J. I. Burton; and

WHEREAS, the Gate City Lady Devils swept all three opponents they faced in the state tournament, beginning with a close five-game match against Glenvar High School; and

WHEREAS, after easily defeating Alta Vista High School in the state semifinals, the Lady Devils won the championship over Northwood High School by a score of 21–25, 26–24, 25–23, 25–12; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Devils returned to Scott County with Gate City High School's first state girls' volleyball championship; and

WHEREAS, the unprecedented success of the 2004 Lady Devils is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and teamwork of the athletes; the leadership of Head Coach Amy Reed and the coaching staff; and the support of the Gate City community, many of whom made the trip to Hillsville to support the team in the state championship tournament; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the 2004 Lady Devils of Gate City High School on their Group A state volleyball championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Amy Reed in honor of the historic success of the 2004 Gate City High School girls' volleyball team.
