WHEREAS, the Department of General Services is charged with the responsibility of acquiring real estate for the purpose of establishing state memorials and cultural resources; and

WHEREAS, numerous states have established law-enforcement memorials on or about the grounds of their respective state capitol complexes to honor fallen law-enforcement officers; and

WHEREAS, the following statistics clearly indicate the sacrifices of Virginia’s law-enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty:

 Of the 50 states, the District of Columbia,
 and the US territories, Virginia ranks 17th
 
with the total number of line of duty deaths; and
 
 

WHEREAS, Virginia is one of several states in the country without a state-level memorial honoring law-enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty; and

WHEREAS, private funding and government grants are currently being studied and planned by private sources to finance the construction and upkeep of such a memorial, as well as sponsoring the annual memorial events to honor our fallen Virginia law-enforcement officers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the Department of General Services be requested to allocate or otherwise provide land on or about the State Capitol Complex grounds for the purpose of erecting a Virginia Law-Enforcement Memorial to honor Virginia law-enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.
