WHEREAS, for 100 years, the Norfolk Public Library has served with distinction the citizens of the City of Norfolk, the Tidewater community, and the state; and

WHEREAS, the City of Norfolk has a long history of prestigious library service with the origins of the Norfolk Public Library evolving from numerous privately supported libraries and book collections of the early 19th century; and

WHEREAS, the Norfolk Public Library maintains an extraordinary collection of books, multimedia materials, computer online resources, and educational exhibits and services; and

WHEREAS, the Norfolk Public Library, the oldest free-lending library in Virginia, opened its doors for the first time on November 21, 1904; and

WHEREAS, library patrons of all ages and interests greatly benefit from the unlimited opportunities for cultural enrichment, intellectual stimulation, as well as the fun and adventure offered to all residents free of charge; and

WHEREAS, with delight and dedication, the Norfolk Public Library family instills a love of books in the children and youth of the City of Norfolk by way of thoughtful and innovative library programs especially designed for young, inquisitive minds; and

WHEREAS, the Norfolk Public Library is noted for its knowledgeable and highly professional staff who are gifted in creating a positive environment for discovering a good book; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Norfolk Public Library and its outstanding staff, past and present, for 100 years of exemplary service in providing lifelong learning to the residents of the City of Norfolk; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Norfolk Public Library as an expression of the appreciation and admiration of the General Assembly for the institution’s exemplary model of excellence for public libraries throughout Virginia.
