2005 SESSION
WHEREAS, on December 11, 2004, at the University of Richmond Stadium, the Eagles from Landstown High School in Virginia Beach played in their second consecutive state football championship game; and
WHEREAS, the Landstown High School football team won the 2004 Virginia High School League Group AAA, Division 6 state championship and became the first football team from the Beach District to win a state Group AAA championship; and
WHEREAS, the first football team in the school's four-year history to win a state title, the Landstown Eagles put the crowning touch on a perfect 14–0 season by defeating the Rams of James Robinson High School, 47–20; and
WHEREAS, the Eagles defeated Deep Creek High School, 48–13, and top-seeded Oscar Smith High School, 40–39, to capture the Eastern Region championship; and
WHEREAS, after easily beating L. C. Bird High School of Chesterfield County, 40–7, in the state semifinals, the Landstown Eagles prepared for their biggest test against Robinson; and
WHEREAS, in the state title game, Eagle running back/quarterback/wide receiver/defensive back Percy Harvin played one of the finest games in Virginia High School League history, scoring four touchdowns, intercepting three passes, rushing for 201 yards, catching five passes for 91 yards, and returning a punt 90 yards for a touchdown; and
WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the Landstown High School Eagles is a tribute to the leadership of Head Coach Chris Beatty and his staff; the talent, perseverance, and teamwork of the athletes; and the sustained and enthusiastic support of the Virginia Beach community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the 2004 Landstown High School Eagles on their first state football championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Chris Beatty in honor of the exceptional and unprecedented performance of the 2004 Landstown High School football team.
