2005 SESSION
WHEREAS, medical coders play a vital but often overlooked role in the nation's health care system; and
WHEREAS, medical coders, by translating information from a patient's medical records into numeric and alphanumeric codes, provide the basis for reimbursement and statistical analysis of the nation's health; and
WHEREAS, medical coding ranks among the top 50 occupations nationally, and the demand for medical coders increases by nearly 10,000 positions annually; and
WHEREAS, increasingly, medical coders must meet stringent training and certification requirements, evidence of their vital role in federal health programs such as Medicare; and
WHEREAS, medical coders are represented nationwide by the American Academy of Professional Coders, with 40,000 members in 350 local chapters, and in the Richmond area by the Richmond Academy of Coders; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Virginia's medical coders for their professionalism and dedication to providing high-quality health care; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Tami Deluca, president of the Richmond Academy of Coders, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and appreciation for the role of medical coders in Virginia's health care system.
