051170276WHEREAS, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in America among men and is the second-leading cause of cancer-related death among American men; and
WHEREAS, more than 230,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed each year, and an estimated 29,000 American men lose their lives to prostate cancer each year; and
WHEREAS, from 1973 to 1992, the incidence of prostate cancer increased by 192 percent, and prostate cancer will strike one in six American men during their lifetimes; and
WHEREAS, despite these frightening statistics, prostate cancer is among the most curable cancers, with early detection and treatment often making the difference between life and death; and
WHEREAS, prostate cancer screenings, including blood tests and physical examinations, can detect cancer at earlier, less dangerous, and more curable stages; and
WHEREAS, the National Prostate Cancer Coalition, in cooperation with such organizations as the National Hockey League and NASCAR, sponsors educational programs about prostate cancer and acts as an advocate for increased funding for prostate cancer research and treatment programs; and
WHEREAS, the President of the United States has proclaimed September as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, calling upon the people of the United States to reaffirm the nation's strong and continuing commitment to control and cure prostate cancer; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate the month of September, in 2005 and in each succeeding year, as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the National Prostate Cancer Coalition so that it may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter; and, be it
RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates post the designation of this month on the General Assembly's website.
