HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 538 Commending the University of Virginia women's lacrosse team.

WHEREAS, the 2004 women's lacrosse team from the University of Virginia captured the NCAA women's lacrosse national championship with a convincing victory over the Tigers of Princeton University; and

WHEREAS, for the second consecutive year, the Cavaliers advanced to the NCAA title game against Princeton, and the 2004 team avenged an overtime loss in 2003 by handily defeating the Tigers by a score of 10–4; and

WHEREAS, entering the 2004 NCAA tournament, the Virginia lacrosse team had compiled a 15–3 record and had won the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference lacrosse championship; and

WHEREAS, the Cavaliers won easily in the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, defeating Mount St. Mary's, 19–2, and Northwestern, 15–11, before defeating Georgetown by a 12–9 score in the semifinals; and

WHEREAS, the Cavaliers relied on their outstanding defense in the title game against Princeton, allowing the Tigers only a single goal in the first half on their way to a 10–4 victory; and

WHEREAS, Cavalier goalkeeper Angela Pfeiffer, who had a career-high 20 saves in the championship game, was named Most Valuable Player of the NCAA tournament, and she was joined on the All-Tournament team by Elizabeth Pinney, Nikki Lieb, Amy Appelt, and Caitlin Banks; and

WHEREAS, Amy Appelt was named Player of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association, and Coach Julie Myers was named Coach of the Year; and

WHEREAS, the 2004 Virginia Cavalier women's lacrosse team played throughout the season with exceptional skill, passion, and teamwork, leading to a well-earned national lacrosse championship; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the 2004 University of Virginia women's lacrosse team on its championship performance; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Coach Julie Myers in honor of the Virginia Cavaliers 2004 national lacrosse champions.
