SUMMARY AS PASSED:

Study; campus safety. Directs the Virginia State Crime Commission to study campus safety at public and private institutions of higher education in Virginia. The Commission shall examine (i) current Virginia policies, procedures, and programs used to promote safety at institutions of higher education; (ii) the nature of criminal offenses at Virginia's public and private institutions of higher education; (iii) the use of best practices or models for campus safety nationally; and (iv) the need to develop statewide procedures to ensure the dissemination of information pertaining to best practices for campus safety.

SUMMARY AS PASSED HOUSE:

Resolution; State Council of Higher Education; best practices for campus safety; report. Requests the State Council of Higher Education to develop procedures that promote the exchange of information and assessment techniques concerning campus safety policies and programs for public and private institutions of higher education in Virginia. The Council shall provide opportunities for the participation of and contributions by all public and private colleges in Virginia. The Council shall also review the practices of institutions and private campus safety organizations in other states. The Council shall submit an executive summary and report no later than the first day of the 2005 General Assembly Session.

SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:

Resolution; State Council of Higher Education; best practices for campus safety; report. Requests the State Council of Higher Education to develop best practices for campus safety policies and programs and disseminate them to public and private institutions of higher education in Virginia. In developing best practices, the Council shall receive input from all public and private colleges in Virginia and shall review best practices of institutions and private campus safety organizations in other states. The Council shall submit an executive summary and report no later than the first day of the 2005 General Assembly Session.
