SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:

Licensure of principals. Directs the Board of Education to require passage of the School Leader's Licensure Assessment (SLLA) as a condition of initial licensure for principals and other school leaders, as may be determined by the Board, on and after July 1, 2005.

This bill is a recommendation of the HJR 20/SJR 58 Commission to Review, Study, and Reform Educational Leadership.

The SLLA is a performance-based assessment for the licensure of school principals and assistant principals or vice-principals. The assessment was developed and is administered by the Educational Testing Service and is based on the standards of the Interstate School Leader's Licensure Assessment Consortium (ISLLC). Alaska, Arkansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, and North Carolina currently use the SLLA.
