2004 SESSION
WHEREAS, Rudolph Harmon, Sr., a former vice mayor of Burkeville and the first African-American member of the Burkeville Town Council, died on December 29, 2003; and
WHEREAS, a native of Portsmouth, Rudolph Harmon earned his associate degree in criminal justice and advanced from part-time elevator operator to chief of security at Piedmont Sanatorium, where he worked for 42 years; and
WHEREAS, an enthusiastic supporter of his Nottoway County community and its youth, civic, and fraternal organizations, Rudolph Harmon served in a wide variety of leadership positions; and
WHEREAS, Rudolph Harmon was the coach for the Burkeville-Nottoway Knockers and Jets and was chairman of the board of the Burkeville Recreation Association; and
WHEREAS, a member of the Burkeville Town Council, Rudolph Harmon served a term as vice mayor, was president of the Piedmont Law Enforcement Association, and was appointed by Governor L. Douglas Wilder to serve on the Southside Virginia Business Educational Commission; and
WHEREAS, Rudolph Harmon was an influential member of the Evergreen Masonic Lodge No. 131, was a Masonic leader on the regional and state level, and achieved the highest level of Masonry; and
WHEREAS, a devoted member of First Nottoway Baptist Church, which he served as trustee, Rudolph Harmon will be sorely missed by his large and loving family and by his countless friends and admirers in the Burkeville and Nottoway communities; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with sadness the passing of an exceptional Virginian, Rudolph Harmon, Sr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Rudolph Harmon, Sr., as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
