047756832WHEREAS, from the arrival of Captain John Smith and his crew at Jamestown in 1607, Virginia's, and the nation's, Colonial Era began; and
WHEREAS, beginning with the earliest English settlement at Jamestown, Virginia's early American colonists were among the first Europeans to settle and explore the New World; and
WHEREAS, early Virginians, among them George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, George Mason, and Patrick Henry, played a dominant role in the establishment of the Commonwealth and building of the nation; and
WHEREAS, Virginia's Colonial Founders faced great dangers in settling the New World, taming the wilderness, and creating a great and democratic Commonwealth and nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly designate October 27th, in 2004 and in each succeeding year, as Colonial Founders Day in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to 17 Colonial societies and organizations in Virginia so that their members may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter; and, be it
RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the Senate post the designation of this day on the General Assembly's website.
