2004 SESSION
WHEREAS, Dr. William R. Harvey, president of Hampton University, was named Chief Executive Officer of the Year by the Southeastern District of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education; and
WHEREAS, each year, the nonprofit organization honors administrators in higher education for improving their school's stature and encouraging innovation among their employees; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Harvey was recognized for Hampton University's fundraising initiatives, expanded academic programs, and growth in school enrollment; and
WHEREAS, the president of Hampton University since 1978, Dr. Harvey has introduced innovations that have solidified Hampton University's strong position among the nation's colleges and universities; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of Dr. Harvey, 64 new academic programs have been implemented at Hampton University, including undergraduate and graduate programs; and
WHEREAS, during Dr. Harvey's tenure, Hampton University has experienced an increase in the size and quality of the student population, with student enrollment increasing from 2,700 to more than 6,000 and SAT scores increasing by an average of 300 points; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Harvey has also led Hampton University's innovative community and educational initiatives, with all Hampton students now required to pursue a community service project prior to graduation; and
WHEREAS, Hampton University's physical plant has also seen remarkable growth and improvement, with 17 new buildings and improvements to existing buildings amounting to nearly $50 million; and
WHEREAS, Hampton University continues to grow and prosper, and Dr. Harvey's latest honor is further evidence of the effectiveness of his leadership; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Dr. William R. Harvey on being named Chief Executive Officer of the Year; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. William R. Harvey as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes for continued success.
