Celebrating the life of Roosevelt Cunningham.

WHEREAS, Roosevelt Cunningham, a committed disciple and longtime, active member of Westwood Baptist Church, was called from earth to glory on January 30, 2004; and

WHEREAS, he was educated in the Richmond City public schools, graduated from Armstrong High School, earned his undergraduate degree in health and physical education from Claflin College in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and received a graduate degree in Guidance and Counseling from Virginia State University; and

WHEREAS, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Roosevelt Cunningham was employed by the Curtis Wright Corporation in Paterson, New Jersey, for several years; and

WHEREAS, a passionate advocate of lifetime earning, he continued his education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and Indiana University; and

WHEREAS, while continuing his education, he served as Assistant Football Coach at Claflin College before beginning his longtime association with Virginia State University, serving as Supervisor of Student Activities, Director of Student Activities, Interim Vice President of Student Affairs, and Interim Athletic Director; and

WHEREAS, after his retirement from Virginia State University, he returned to the institution to serve as Interim Athletic Director, and worked briefly as Dean of Students at Federal City Teachers College in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, Roosevelt "Ruedi" Cunningham officiated high school basketball and football games for two decades; was a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated; served as a scout for college officials for the National Football League and as an advisor for the Special Olympics and the National Youth Summer Sports Programs; and was a member of the Board of Directors for Chesterfield County Crime Solvers, the 555th Parachute Infantry (Airborne) Association, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Officials Association, and the Virginia State University Athletic Boosters Club; and

WHEREAS, he was the recipient of numerous awards, recognitions, and accolades from various community organizations, including the Virginia Association of College and University Housing Officers, the International Association of College and Universities, Virginia State University, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and he was inducted into the Virginia State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989; and

WHEREAS, Roosevelt Cunningham devoted his professional life to inspiring others, especially youth, and spent his personal time helping others; and

WHEREAS, a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, churchman, and hero to many, Roosevelt Cunningham's memory will be cherished forever; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an outstanding Virginian, Roosevelt Cunningham; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Roosevelt Cunningham as an expression of the esteem in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
