WHEREAS, Leigh Middleditch, a cofounder of the Thomas C. Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia, has retired as chairman of the Institute; and
WHEREAS, a resident of Virginia since 1947, Leigh Middleditch earned his B.A. and LL.B. degrees from the University of Virginia and has pursued a successful career with the law firm of McGuire, Woods, Battle and Boothe; and
WHEREAS, among his numerous public service activities, Leigh Middleditch has served as chairman of the University of Virginia Health Services Foundation, as president of the Alumni Board of Managers, as president of the Miller Center for Studies of the Presidency Foundation, as a leading proponent of the Charlottesville Free Clinic, and as a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Leigh Middleditch has served on the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association, as president of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, and as a director of the United States Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, Leigh Middleditch's most significant and lasting contribution to the Commonwealth is through his role with the Thomas C. Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership, which he cofounded at the University of Virginia in 1993; and
WHEREAS, from 1994 to 2002, Leigh Middleditch served as chairman of the board of the Sorensen Institute, which is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to improving the quality of governance in Virginia through education of political leaders in public policy and ethics; and
WHEREAS, numerous Sorenson Institute graduates serve the Commonwealth as elected and appointed political leaders and as community and business leaders; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of Leigh Middleditch, the Sorensen Institute has developed leaders who are better informed, able to work with people from other political parties, and possess a broad perspective on the needs of the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, in his many leadership roles, Leigh Middleditch has continued to contribute to the growth of Virginia's economy and to the preparation of the Commonwealth's leaders to respond to the challenges that lie ahead; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Leigh B. Middleditch, Jr., for his outstanding leadership of the Sorensen Institute and for his ongoing contributions to the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Leigh B. Middleditch, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and appreciation for his long and fruitful career of public service.
