SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 221
On the deaths of June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash.

WHEREAS, June Carter Cash was born Valerie June Carter on June 23, 1929, in Maces Springs, Scott County, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, by the age of 10, June Carter was performing stage shows and on the radio with her mother, Maybelle Carter, and aunt and uncle, A.P. and Sara Carter--the original Carter Family--“The First Family of Country Music"; and

WHEREAS, June, along with her mother and sisters, carried on the Carter Family legacy by performing as the Carter Sisters at venues throughout the nation, including the Grand Ole Opry; and

WHEREAS, June's 1968 marriage to Johnny Cash resulted in a four-decade partnership that influenced the development of country music by strengthening the bonds between folk and country music; and

WHEREAS, Johnny Cash was recognized for his achievements by becoming the youngest living inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and winning 11 Grammy awards; and

WHEREAS, June Carter Cash was honored for her achievements through five Grammy Awards, including two posthumously for her last project, which was recorded at the family's home in Maces Springs, Scott County, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the musical legacy of the Carter Family has been carried on in Scott County and Southwest Virginia by June's cousin, Janette Carter, at the famous Carter Family Music Center, commonly known as the Carter Fold, near Hiltons, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, prior to their deaths in 2003, June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash often visited and performed at the Carter Fold, reflecting their respect and love for country music's origins and June's family heritage; and

WHEREAS, the influence of June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash will continue to be felt for decades to come across a wide variety of musical genres; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commemorate the musical legacy of June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Janette Carter and the Carter Family Memorial Music Center of Hiltons, Scott County, Virginia, as an expression of the admiration, respect, and gratitude of the General Assembly.
