WHEREAS, by act of the 1982 General Assembly, milk is the official beverage of the Commonwealth of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Dairy Princess Program is designed to promote the consumption and sale of milk and to remind Virginians of the importance of milk in their daily diets; and

WHEREAS, a cooperative effort of various local dairy promotion agencies and dairy councils, the Virginia Dairy Princess Program annually names a Virginia Dairy Princess, an Alternate Princess, and a Dairy Duchess; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s Dairy Princess for 2004 is Ashley Shiflett of Fort Defiance, a junior at Fort Defiance High School who is active in Future Farmers of America, forensics, soccer, and 4-H; and

WHEREAS, the 2004 Alternate Princess is Veronica Paulson from Port Republic, a sophomore at Spotswood High School who joined the Rockingham County Dairy 4-H Club in 1996 and is active in dairy judging and quiz bowl competitions; and

WHEREAS, the 2004 Dairy Duchess is Kristin Windle of Winchester, a senior at Sherando High School who has been part of the Virginia Dairy Princess Program for three years as a Dairy Maid; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s Dairy Princess will appear throughout 2004 at various local and statewide agricultural events, including 4-H dairy shows, county dairy shows, and the Virginia State Fair; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Ashley Shiflett on being named Virginia Dairy Princess, Veronica Paulson on being named Alternate Dairy Princess, and Kristin Windle on being named Dairy Duchess; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly join with the Virginia Dairy Princess and her colleagues in reminding Virginians of the benefits of including milk in their daily diets; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to Ashley Shiflett, Veronica Paulson, and Kristin Windle as an expression of the congratulations and best wishes of the General Assembly.
