SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 181
Commending Samuel Hopkins Shrum.

WHEREAS, Samuel Hopkins Shrum of Harrisonburg, descendent of Scots-Irish and German ancestors, born in Dayton, Virginia, on June 19, 1912, has always been a selfless individual; and

WHEREAS, Sam Shrum worked at his family's Dayton brickyard while working toward a bachelor of science degree in architectural engineering from Virginia Tech; and

WHEREAS, Sam Shrum has always excelled as a businessman, beginning as a partner of George E. Shrum and Son, then as production engineer for Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co.; and

WHEREAS, while serving Nielsen Construction Company as executive vice president, general manager, treasurer, director, and from 1962-1976 as president, Sam Shrum played a vital role in the company's growth from seven to nearly 300 employees; and

WHEREAS, Sam Shrum has been vitally important to the Harrisonburg community and continues to this day to serve his friends, his neighbors, and his community; and

WHEREAS, on February 23, 2004, at age 91, Sam Shrum will be honored by the Harrisonburg Rotary Club, where, as a member, he will have completed 55 years of perfect attendance; and

WHEREAS, during those 55 years, Sam Shrum has served on the board of directors, as club president, and as a faithful and active member participating in the club's programs and giving both time and treasure to support the work of the Harrisonburg Rotary Club and that of Rotary International; and

WHEREAS, in his personal, community, and professional work, Sam Shrum personifies the object of Rotary International by encouraging and fostering "the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise;" and

WHEREAS, Sam Shrum has consistently and faithfully promoted high ethical standards in his personal and professional life by applying the 4-way test, which asks the following four questions: (1) Is it the truth? (2) Is it fair to all concerned? (3) Will it build good will and better friendships? and (4) Will it be beneficial to all concerned?; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, that the General Assembly hereby commend Samuel Hopkins Shrum for his life of service and commitment to the people of Harrisonburg and the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Samuel Hopkins Shrum as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and appreciation for a long life of service and success.
