SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 14
Celebrating the life of Dr. Evelyn M. Hellinger.

WHEREAS, Dr. Evelyn M. Hellinger of Norfolk, a professor at Old Dominion and Norfolk State Universities and a passionate advocate for equal rights, especially for those with special needs, died on September 5, 2003; and

WHEREAS, a native of Milford, Massachusetts, Evelyn Hellinger received her undergraduate degree in education from New York University and her doctorate from the University of Florida; and

WHEREAS, while working as a professor at Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University, Dr. Hellinger became deeply involved with special education and creating new approaches to teaching people with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hellinger was one of the founders of the Regional Diagnostic Special Education School and served as its first principal; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hellinger worked to bridge the gap between the medical community and teachers of students with special needs, working with school systems in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake to provide a multidisciplinary approach to special education; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hellinger also worked with local schools to develop the South Eastern Cooperative Education Program and continued to educate students at Old Dominion and Norfolk State, giving special attention to student teachers; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hellinger gave generously of her time and talents to a wide range of community and charitable organizations and willingly shared her knowledge, spirit, and energy to contribute to the building of a better community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an exceptionally dedicated educator and community leader, Dr. Evelyn M. Hellinger; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Evelyn M. Hellinger as an expression of the respect in which her memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
