WHEREAS, Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Arlington is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2004; and
WHEREAS, Mount Olivet United Methodist Church is the oldest of Arlington County's churches still on its original site, at the corner of Glebe Road and 16th Street; and
WHEREAS, from its beginning in 1854, Mount Olivet United Methodist Church has contributed to its community, leading by example, educating and supporting young people, and persevering through adversity; and
WHEREAS, Mount Olivet's history of service shows in the lives of its members and their impact on the community, including young ministers who put in long hours and such Arlington legends as Frank L. Ball, a prominent state senator who served for nearly 50 years as superintendent of the Sunday school; and
WHEREAS, Mount Olivet has encouraged its young people to serve others, helping migrant workers on the Eastern Shore and building Habitat for Humanity houses in the summers; and
WHEREAS, during the civil rights struggles of the 1960s, Mount Olivet youth hosted integrated "after game" parties that attracted hundreds of students to the church after high school football and basketball games, setting an example in race relations for the entire community; and
WHEREAS, in the past 150 years, Arlington's Mount Olivet United Methodist Church has kept constant its emphasis on people and mission; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby salute the members of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church for their steadfast dedication, faith, and contribution to the Arlington community over the past 150 years; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mount Olivet United Methodist Church as an expression of the admiration, appreciation, and best wishes of the General Assembly.
