047854768WHEREAS, Lena Whitley of Norfolk, a resident of Norfolk for most of the 20th century and the matriarch of a large and loving family, died on June 5, 2003, at the age of 109; and
WHEREAS, born in Robinsville, North Carolina, in 1893, Lena Whitley moved with her family to Norfolk at a young age; and
WHEREAS, Lena Whitley was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church for more than 80 years; and
WHEREAS, Lena Whitley was an active member of her community, serving as a member of the Cora Brooks Sunday School Class, the Huntersville Garden Club, the Emma V. Kelley Glee Club, and Richardson's Chorus; and
WHEREAS, during her long life, Lena Whitley witnessed the inauguration of 20 United States presidents, the installation of eight popes, and the conclusion of two world wars; and
WHEREAS, Lena Whitley will be missed by her family, the parishioners of the First Calvary Baptist Church, and her countless friends and admirers in the Norfolk community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a remarkable Virginian, Lena Whitley; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lena Whitley as an expression of the respect in which her memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
