049839808WHEREAS, Brooks Russell Leavitt of Martinsville, a prominent and successful businessman and a generous volunteer in many community-service organizations, died on February 3, 2003; and
WHEREAS, a native of Connecticut, Brooks Leavitt graduated from the Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut, and Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine; and
WHEREAS, during World War II, Brooks Leavitt served his country as a member of the United States Naval Reserve in the Pacific Theatre; and
WHEREAS, Brooks Leavitt was a former executive vice president of Virginia Glass Products Corporation and a director of Virginia Mirror Company in Martinsville; and
WHEREAS, a former member of the Martinsville Kiwanis Club and the Martinsville Jaycees, Brooks Leavitt served as chairman of the Martinsville/Henry County March of Dimes; and
WHEREAS, in 1954, Brooks Leavitt was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Martinsville Junior Chamber of Commerce, and in 1956, he served as chairman of the Court Procedures Committee of the Mayor's Commission on Human Values; and
WHEREAS, throughout a life of significant and sustained achievement, Brooks Leavitt served his family and his fellow citizens with uncommon dedication and commitment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with sadness the passing of an exceptional Virginian, Brooks Russell Leavitt; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Brooks Russell Leavitt as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
