047852768WHEREAS, Dr. Thelma D. Curl, a member of the faculty of Norfolk State University for more than 30 years and the former dean of the School of Arts and Letters, died on February 25, 2003; and
WHEREAS, a native of New Kent County, Thelma Curl graduated with high honors from Virginia Union University and earned her master's degree from the University of Michigan and her doctorate from Columbia University; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Curl joined the faculty of Norfolk State University in 1957 and held several leadership posts, including head of the English and foreign languages department, before her retirement in 1990; and
WHEREAS, in the mid-1970s, Dr. Curl helped establish the master's in communication program at Norfolk State University and served as chairman of the program; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Curl also founded a graduate program in intercultural communication that linked Norfolk State University with several colleges in Puerto Rico; and
WHEREAS, in addition to her duties at Norfolk State University, Dr. Curl served as local director of Upward Bound, worked on curriculum and teacher certification committees for the Virginia Department of Education, and was a consultant to the Ford Foundation and regional chair of the Danforth Foundation; and
WHEREAS, a member of Second Liberty Baptist Church in Quinton, Dr. Curl was an associate member of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church in Norfolk, where she served in a variety of leadership positions; and
WHEREAS, during her long and distinguished career at Norfolk State University, Dr. Curl taught, mentored, and counseled thousands of young people; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a singularly dedicated and successful educator, Dr. Thelma D. Curl; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Thelma D. Curl as an expression of the high regard in which her memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
