049166480WHEREAS, Alec Gould, the superintendent of Colonial National Historical Park in Yorktown, retires on June 3, 2004, ending an outstanding 41-year career with the National Park Service; and
WHEREAS, Alec Gould began his career with the National Park Service as a ranger/historian at Colonial National Historical Park in 1963; and
WHEREAS, before returning to Colonial National Historical Park as superintendent in 1989, Alec Gould worked at Fort Donelson in Tennessee, Appomattox, the LBJ Ranch in Texas, and Buffalo National River in Arkansas; and
WHEREAS, in 1993 Alec Gould coordinated the General Management Plan for Colonial National Historical Park with the master plan of York County for the Village of Yorktown; and
WHEREAS, that effort has led to the completion of a shelter over the Poor Potter archaeological site, moving and rehabilitating the freight shed on the waterfront, and the opening of the Carrot Tree restaurant; and
WHEREAS, the more recently, Alec Gould has played a key role in the planning for the 400th anniversary of Jamestown celebration in 2007, working with state and local groups on planning and construction; and
WHEREAS, the National Park Service and APVA Preservation Virginia have worked cooperatively on a Development Concept Plan for Historic Jamestowne, with construction on many projects already underway; and
WHEREAS, throughout his 41 years of service to the National Park Service, Alec Gould has established an enviable record of achievement and dedication to public service, and his legacy will be evident to the thousands of visitors to the Colonial National Historical Park in 2007; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Alec Gould on the completion of a meritorious career of service to the National Park Service and the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Alec Gould as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude for his contributions to Virginia and best wishes for a long and rewarding retirement.
