WHEREAS, Luther Jackson Middle School in Fairfax County celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2004; and

WHEREAS, located in the Falls Church area of Fairfax County, Luther Jackson Middle School was named for Dr. Luther P. Jackson, a distinguished historian and educator whose nationally recognized writings identified the contributions of African Americans to Virginia's history; and

WHEREAS, Luther Jackson Middle School was established as a school for African-American students, who prior to 1954 had to journey to Manassas or Washington, D.C., to continue their education past the seventh grade; and

WHEREAS, in 1965, when school desegregation laws mandated changes in attendance and boundaries, Luther Jackson Middle School became an intermediate school and later a middle school; and

WHEREAS, Luther Jackson Middle School today serves some 1,100 students from 100 countries speaking 50 languages; and

WHEREAS, Luther Jackson Middle School is committed to providing academic excellence in a safe, positive environment in which diversity is respected and all students feel invited and expected to become participants in their own academic, creative, physical, and social growth; and

WHEREAS, Luther Jackson Middle School fosters the development of healthy character, embraces the use of technology, uses community resources, fosters parental involvement, recognizes the need to work cooperatively, and encourages students to become successful learners; and

WHEREAS, through the dedication, initiative, and hard work of its administration and faculty, Luther Jackson Middle School has become a vital part of its community and the Fairfax County public school system; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Luther Jackson Middle School on the occasion of its golden anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Carol Robinson, principal of Luther Jackson Middle School, as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes.
