WHEREAS, Lucy Pannill Sale of Martinsville, a noted local philanthropist whose generosity assisted numerous organizations in the Martinsville-Henry County community, died on August 26, 2003; and

WHEREAS, a native of North Carolina and the oldest daughter of the founders of a local textile company, Lucy Sale attended schools in Winston-Salem and the North Carolina College for Women; and

WHEREAS, Lucy Sale was an exceedingly generous benefactor to such worthy organizations as Citizens Against Family Violence, the YMCA, the United Way, the Piedmont Arts Association, the Salvation Army, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society; and

WHEREAS, Lucy Sale also funded dozens of scholarships for local students, including several scholarships to the Virginia Military Institute in honor of her late husband, Ernest Ashton Sale, a VMI graduate; and

WHEREAS, Lucy Sale was a benefactor of the MARC Workshop, which provides jobs, life-skills training, and adult education for the mentally retarded in Martinsville and Henry County, and which named its newest addition the Lucy Pannill Sale Building; and

WHEREAS, a charter member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church of Martinsville, Lucy Sale was an honorary member of the Martinsville Garden Club and held leadership positions in the Garden Club of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, throughout her long life, Lucy Sale shared her good fortune with her community and contributed in numerous ways to the improvement of the quality of life in Martinsville and Henry County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with sadness the passing of an exceptional Virginian, Lucy Pannill Sale; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lucy Pannill Sale as an expression of the respect in which her memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
