WHEREAS, Malcolm J. Forbes, Sr., a lifelong resident of the Great Bridge community in Chesapeake, died on February 21, 2004; and

WHEREAS, born and raised in Great Bridge, Malcolm Forbes attended Great Bridge School from the first grade through graduation and served in the United States Army during World War II, landing in Normandy shortly after D-Day; and

WHEREAS, Malcolm Forbes was a charter member of Great Bridge Baptist Church, one of a group of founders who laid the cornerstone for the first church building; and

WHEREAS, Malcolm Forbes was a former grand master of the Great Bridge Masonic Lodge No. 257 and received his 50-year membership pin in 2003; and

WHEREAS, Malcolm Forbes was a well-known and beloved leader in the Great Bridge community, often introducing new residents to the community and quietly assisting those in need; and

WHEREAS, an avid follower of the fortunes of the Great Bridge High School football team, for decades Malcolm Forbes was a familiar sight on the sidelines and in the stands at Great Bridge athletic events; and

WHEREAS, married for nearly 60 years to Thelma Sawyer Forbes, Malcolm Forbes is survived by a son who became the first United States Congressman ever elected from the City of Chesapeake and a daughter who became the first Treasurer of the Commonwealth from Chesapeake; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with sadness the passing of an exceptional Virginian, Malcolm J. Forbes, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Malcolm J. Forbes, Sr., as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
