HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 432
Commending Arthur R. Giesen, Jr.

WHEREAS, Arthur R. "Pete" Giesen, Jr., represented the citizens of the Central Shenandoah Valley in the House of Delegates of Virginia for 32 years; and

WHEREAS, a native of Radford and a graduate of Yale University, Pete Giesen earned his master's of business administration degree from Harvard University in 1956; and

WHEREAS, first elected to the House of Delegates in 1964, Pete Giesen at various times represented the citizens of Augusta, Bath, Highland, and Rockingham Counties and the Cities of Staunton and Waynesboro; and

WHEREAS, Pete Giesen is a former House minority leader and assistant minority leader and was at the time of his retirement in 1996 a ranking member of the Appropriations, Transportation, Militia and Police, and Counties, Cities and Towns Committees; and

WHEREAS, a mentor to many younger colleagues during his long career, Pete Giesen built an admirable reputation as a mediator in the House of Delegates, able to bring legislators from both sides of the aisle together on issues of importance to the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure in the House of Delegates, Pete Giesen served on numerous commissions and committees, including those that brought about improvements in treatment for the mentally ill and assisted those with physical disadvantages; and

WHEREAS, Pete Giesen also served as mentor to Boys State and the Model General Assembly while he served in the General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, Pete Giesen is a member of the board of the Lutheran Family Services of Virginia, the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace Foundation, and the Foundation for the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center; and

WHEREAS, Pete Giesen continues to serve the citizens of numerous Virginia localities and institutions as a legislative consultant and legislative coordinator for the Virginia Coalition on Aging and the Virginia Association of Area Agencies on Aging; and

WHEREAS, over a long and distinguished career in the House of Delegates, Pete Giesen served the citizens of the Shenandoah Valley and the Commonwealth with exceptional diligence, dedication, and integrity; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Arthur R. Giesen, Jr., on his long and meritorious career in the House of Delegates; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Arthur R. Giesen, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for his outstanding service to the citizens of Virginia.
