WHEREAS, in 1896 a group of community-spirited women formed the Norfolk City Union of the King's Daughters to provide medical care for indigent mothers and their children; and

WHEREAS, in 1961 the King's Daughters' Children's Hospital was built, offering the Norfolk community 88 beds and a variety of services; and

WHEREAS, in 1979 the name of the hospital was changed to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters and is today Virginia's only free-standing, full-service pediatric hospital, treating children from birth through age 21; and

WHEREAS, a not-for-profit hospital, Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters offers a regional pediatric referral center for southeastern Virginia, the Eastern Shore, and northeastern North Carolina, an area with a population of nearly two million; and

WHEREAS, Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters also treats children from across the United States and around the world; and

WHEREAS, Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters is home to the Eastern Virginia Medical School's pediatric residency program, training the nation's pediatricians, pediatric specialists, and pediatric nurses; and

WHEREAS, Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters services more than 5,900 inpatient admissions and more than 99,000 outpatient visits annually, and its emergency center handles an additional 43,000 visits each year; and

WHEREAS, Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters offers a wide array of specialties and services, including the Children's Specialty Group, CHKD Surgical Group, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and numerous others; and

WHEREAS, the Children's Health Line is a free service that helps locate a pediatrician or pediatric specialist, along with information on parenting, and the Center for Pediatric Research, a joint program with the Eastern Virginia Medical School, is home to a nationally recognized pediatric research program; and

WHEREAS, for more than a century, the dedicated staff of Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters has provided the citizens of Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth with the finest in pediatric medical care; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters for its dedicated and ongoing service to the citizens of Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters as an expression of the admiration and appreciation of the General Assembly.
