2004 SESSION
WHEREAS, Dr. Judith E. Winston, former interim director of the Virginia Museum of Natural History in Martinsville, has served for more than 10 years as the museum’s director of research, director of science and learning, and curator of bryozoology with distinction, leadership and initiative; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Winston, who earned her master of science degree from the University of New Hampshire and her doctorate from the University of Chicago, is respected by her peers for her considerable scientific achievements during the last quarter-century and is an internationally recognized expert on bryozoan zoology; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Winston was among the first scientists to recognize the ecological impact of plastic waste in the oceans; and
WHEREAS, prior to her employment at the Virginia Museum of Natural History, Dr. Winston served at the Smithsonian Marine Station, Johns Hopkins University, and the American Museum of Natural History with great dedication and success; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Museum of Natural History continues to benefit from her research expertise, which has sustained the museum’s scientific reputation; and
WHEREAS, the board of trustees of the Virginia Museum of Natural History has lauded Dr. Winston for her services to the museum and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Dr. Judith E. Winston for her exemplary career and numerous contributions to science and to the Virginia Museum of Natural History; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. Judith E. Winston as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude for her services to the citizens of Virginia.
