047818476WHEREAS, 2004 marks the 25th anniversary of the Society of St. Andrew, the largest gleaning organization and one of the most successful nonprofit hunger-relief organizations in the country; and
WHEREAS, the Society of St. Andrew was founded in a sheep shed on Sweet Hollow Road in the Bedford County community of Big Island and, a quarter-century later, is widely recognized for its innovative approach to alleviating hunger; and
WHEREAS, each year the Society of St. Andrew saves and distributes approximately 40 million pounds of nutritious produce to the hungry of the Commonwealth and the nation; and
WHEREAS, the fresh produce provided by the Society of St. Andrew reaches nearly every county in Virginia, and the society's success is recognized and appreciated throughout the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, the United States Department of Agriculture has endorsed the Society of St. Andrew as the major gleaning organization in the nation, and the society was the focus of a recent speech on the floor of the United States Senate by Senator Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, the success of the Society of St. Andrew is due in large part to the tireless efforts of its volunteers, which now number more than 43,000; and
WHEREAS, founded and still headquartered in Bedford County, the Society of St. Andrew has experienced remarkable success over its 25-year history to the benefit of hungry citizens throughout the Commonwealth and across the country; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Society of St. Andrew on the occasion of its silver anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kenneth C. Horne, executive director of the Society of St. Andrew, as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation and best wishes for continued success.
