Commending the William Fleming High School football team.

WHEREAS, the 2003 William Fleming High School Colonels football team experienced exhilarating success during its strong run through the regular season and the regional and state playoffs; and

WHEREAS, the William Fleming Colonels, from Roanoke, finished the regular season with a record of 7–2 and won the Blue Ridge District championship with a 12–7 victory over rival William Byrd High School; and

WHEREAS, the Colonels then defeated Blacksburg High School, 6–0, to advance to the Region III, Division 4 title game, where they posted their second consecutive shutout in defeating Liberty High School, 13–0; and

WHEREAS, William Fleming's stout defense again came to the fore in the state semifinals, where the Colonels defeated Magna Vista High School, 13–8, to qualify for a trip to the Group AA, Division 4 state title game against undefeated Powhatan High School; and

WHEREAS, Coach Keith Smith's Colonels came agonizingly close to capturing William Fleming's first state football championship, and their exceptional 2003 season is a credit to the talent and dedication of the athletes and the support of the students and staff of William Fleming High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the William Fleming High School football team on its triumphant 2003 season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Keith Smith in honor of the historic success of the 2003 William Fleming Colonels.
