HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 372 Commending the agencies, companies, organizations, and individuals who assisted the citizens of Virginia in the aftermath of Hurricane Isabel. Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 13, 2004 Agreed to by the Senate, February 19, 2004

WHEREAS, Hurricane Isabel struck the eastern United States on September 18, 2003, causing severe property damage and personal hardship for the citizens of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, hurricane-force winds uprooted thousands of trees, downed numerous power lines, and caused extensive flooding, creating emergencies and widespread power loss throughout eastern Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the impact of the storm caused millions of dollars of damage and left Virginians without power for as long as two weeks after the storm had passed; and

WHEREAS, the response of organizations and individuals to the emergency was crucial to mitigating the effects of the storm, and the incidents of individual heroism and corporate generosity were numerous in the days and weeks following Hurricane Isabel; and

WHEREAS, first responders from police, rescue, and fire departments saved lives during and immediately after the storm and assisted in the massive clean-up and rebuilding effort that followed; and

WHEREAS, personnel from state and local government agencies worked long hours to expedite emergency assistance to Virginians left homeless or destitute by the storm; and

WHEREAS, private companies reacted with remarkable generosity, donating food, water, and other vital supplies to assist Virginians in need; and

WHEREAS, nonprofit agencies, churches, and community organizations likewise offered badly needed assistance to their most afflicted neighbors; and

WHEREAS, the collective efforts of individuals and organizations, responding to an unprecedented emergency, were instrumental in preventing even greater tragedy and hardship following Hurricane Isabel; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the agencies, companies, organizations, and individuals who provided vital assistance to the citizens of Virginia during and in the aftermath of Hurricane Isabel.
