2004 SESSION
WHEREAS, shortly after the establishment of Hanover County in 1720, a site was selected for a new church; and
WHEREAS, on July 17, 1729, St. Paul's Vestry authorized the construction of a large upper church about five miles from the Hanover County Courthouse; and
WHEREAS, Slash Church, named for a topography featuring ravines and marshy areas and for slash pines, was constructed of timbers fastened with wooden pegs and hand-hewn windows and doorframes; and
WHEREAS, in 2004, the 275th anniversary of Slash Church, the church stands as the oldest un-remodeled frame church in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, the first rector of Slash Church was the Reverend Zachary Brook, who was succeeded by the Reverend Patrick Henry, uncle to the famed Revolutionary orator; and
WHEREAS, in 1862 during the Civil War, Slash Church, used as a hospital and as lodging for a Confederate encampment, had a battle in the area named after it—the Battle of Slash Church; and
WHEREAS, in the early 1950s, Lena Stafford Williams, the mother of the pastor, led an ambitious restoration project to return the interior of the sanctuary to its original 18th-century appearance; and
WHEREAS, the current Slash Church was expanded in the 1970s, with each addition carefully matched to the architectural style of the original; and
WHEREAS, Slash Church has been a haven for religious freedom, sheltering St. Paul's Episcopal Church during their inception, Brown Grove Baptist Church, Lebanon (Episcopal) United Methodist Church, and The Disciples of Christ at Slash Church; and
WHEREAS, over its 275 years of existence, Slash Church has become a vital part of the Ashland-Hanover community and an irreplaceable part of Virginia's historical heritage; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Slash Christian Church Disciples of Christ on the occasion of its 275th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Slash Christian Church Disciples of Christ as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes.
