WHEREAS, Nancy Amanda Redd of Martinsville, Miss Virginia 2003, represented the Commonwealth at the 2003 Miss America Pageant; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Laurel Park High School and a 2003 cum laude graduate of Harvard University, Nancy Amanda Redd is a freelance writer who has contributed to the Princeton Review's Girls' Guide to the SAT; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Amanda Redd was a winning contestant on the ABC television show, "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" and was named one of Glamour Magazine's Top Ten College Women; and

WHEREAS, a member of the Virginia and National 4-H Board of Trustees, Nancy Amanda Redd has been a motivational speaker for youth programs nationwide and has used her platform as Miss Virginia to promote the values represented by 4-H; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Amanda Redd served the Commonwealth as a Page to the Senate of Virginia in 1994; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Amanda Redd has served as research assistant to Dr. Henry Louis Gates, professor of African-American Studies, as an intern for the Belgian American Embassy, and as a television and radio personality for WMVA and PBS; and

WHEREAS, a young woman of formidable accomplishments and obvious talent, Nancy Amanda Redd will prove an effective and compassionate representative of Martinsville, 4-H, and the Commonwealth during her year as the reigning Miss Virginia; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Nancy Amanda Redd on becoming Miss Virginia 2003 and on her notable educational and professional accomplishments; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Nancy Amanda Redd as an expression of the congratulations and best wishes of the General Assembly.
