2004 SESSION
WHEREAS, Garfield Elementary School, one of Fairfax County's finest elementary schools, celebrated its 50th anniversary in October 2003; and
WHEREAS, located in the Springfield area of Fairfax County, Garfield Elementary School was established in 1952 in a temporary facility and moved into its new building in 1953; and
WHEREAS, Garfield Elementary School serves a diverse population, its students representing 21 countries and 19 primary languages; and
WHEREAS, in addition to Garfield Elementary's ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) program, the school is home to learning disability resource, noncategorical education, Title 1 Step-Up Language Arts, and school-based gifted and talented programs; and
WHEREAS, Garfield Elementary School offers a wide range of student activities and programs, from band, orchestra, and chorus to field days, family literacy night, and Medieval, Colonial, and Arbor Days; and
WHEREAS, Garfield Elementary School enjoys an active PTA that enriches the instructional program with parent volunteers and sponsorship of various special events; and
WHEREAS, in 2000 Garfield Elementary School was the only school in the Commonwealth selected for the Exemplary Reading Program Award from the Virginia State Reading Association; and
WHEREAS, the parents, teachers, and administration of Garfield Elementary School, with a current enrollment of about 350 students, strive to encourage each student to reach his or her potential, to think critically, to value and respect individual differences, and to succeed in an ever-changing society; and
WHEREAS, through the dedication, initiative, and hard work of its administration and faculty, Garfield Elementary School has become a vital part of its community and one of the leading elementary schools in Fairfax County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly salute Garfield Elementary School on the occasion of its golden anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Judith A. Thompson, principal of Garfield Elementary School, as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes.
