HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 333
Commending Annandale High School.

WHEREAS, Annandale High School in Fairfax County, one of the finest public high schools in the Commonwealth, celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2004; and

WHEREAS, now the home of more than 2,300 students and nearly 200 administrators, teachers, and counselors, Annandale High School has excelled for 50 years in academics, in extracurricular activities, and in athletics; and

WHEREAS, Annandale High School offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) program and was the first high school in Fairfax County to adopt the International General Certificate for Secondary Education (IGCSE) for 9th and 10th grade students; and

WHEREAS, more than half of the students at Annandale High School are enrolled in IB, IGCSE, or advanced placement programs, and 81 percent of Annandale's 2003 graduates were accepted in college programs; and

WHEREAS, Annandale High School's band has earned Virginia Honor Band status eight times, including the past five years consecutively, and its music department was named a Virginia Music Educators Association Blue Ribbon School in 2002 and 2003; and

WHEREAS, Annandale High School's theater, art, and photography programs have won widespread acclaim, and the school has eight active honor societies and numerous other academically oriented clubs; and

WHEREAS, Annandale High School offers a full range of athletic opportunities in boys' and girls' sports and competes in the Virginia High School League's highest level, Group AAA, in 12 girls' sports and 11 boys' sports; and

WHEREAS, Annandale High School teams have won six state football championships and state titles in boys' cross country, girls' soccer, golf, boys' gymnastics, girls' basketball, and boys' lacrosse; and

WHEREAS, Annandale High School has garnered well-deserved acclaim for its innovative programs, including a nationally recognized mediation program and peer-counseling classes, a groundbreaking character education program, and College Partnership and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) programs that support academic achievement for ethnically diverse students; and

WHEREAS, Annandale High School's teachers are at the center of the school's half-century of growth and success, and many have earned regional, state, and national recognition for teaching excellence; and

WHEREAS, through the dedication, initiative, and hard work of its administration, faculty, students, and parents, Annandale High School has for 50 years more than lived up to its motto: A Tradition of Excellence; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Annandale High School on the occasion of its golden anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Rod Manuel, principal of Annandale High School, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and best wishes for continued success.
