HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 319
On the death of John A. Keating.

WHEREAS, John A. Keating of Franconia, a retired United States Army lieutenant colonel and a prominent and well-respected leader in his Fairfax County community, died on November 17, 2003; and

WHEREAS, a native of Jamaica, New York, John Keating enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and commanded a tank platoon during the Battle of the Bulge and the capture of the Frankfurt airport during World War II; and

WHEREAS, after the war, John Keating transferred to Army Intelligence and served on the staff of General Douglas MacArthur in Japan; and

WHEREAS, while in the military, John Keating earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, and after retiring in 1962 with the rank of lieutenant colonel, he worked in the Army Security Agency and the Army Materiel Command; and

WHEREAS, a resident of Franconia since 1961, John Keating was youth commissioner for Franconia and the coach of many youth baseball, football, and softball teams; and

WHEREAS, John Keating was a member of the Fairfax Human Rights Commission for 20 years, a founding member of Friends of Crossroads, a drug rehabilitation center, a founding parishioner of St. Lawrence the Martyr Catholic Church in Franconia, and a charter member of the Father Ryder Chapter of the Knights of Columbus; and

WHEREAS, throughout a life of significant achievement, John Keating served his nation and his fellow citizens with dedication and commitment; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with sadness the passing of an exceptional Virginian, John A. Keating; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John A. Keating as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
